The 3 most common problems SME’s face when hiring technical staff.
Hiring the right people and building out your project teams is one of the most important indicators of success, this goes without saying. Just like any hire, it’s tricky to do well - only with the added risk of much larger individual impact.
Here are three of the biggest problems we (and our clients) have complained about when trying to hire technical staff. Do you agree?
In reverse order…
#3 Sourcing is a crapshoot
As with most things, you can only make a decision based on the options presented to you - what if none of those options are good?
Yes you can put an ad on a site, but who knows who is looking? You could go to a third party, but who’s knows exactly how much they understand about technology.
One client found that she spent more time fielding CV’s than actually working on her project.
#2 Knowing if a candidate fits the bill
So now you have waded through every cv, you’ve found a few that you think look ok. Great!
Now it’s time to figure out if your selected candidates are up to technical muster. If you are an engineer, no worries. However if not you have to rely on gut feeling or taking precious time away from existing technical staff.
A lot of people, tired of the process up to this point, simply pick - this is where things go awry, if a candidate is not a good fit, you could end up with a much larger problem down the line.
You need a measurable process to accurately vet candidates (both technical and company cultural).
#1 Time, and lack of it.
People are busy. Your busy, I’m busy, we’re all busy. You can absolutely put together a world class tech team, you can also learn Japanese - if only you had more time.
Lack of time is by no means exclusive to hiring a great team but it can easily take valuable resource away from core responsibilities.
With such a big impact on your business the most common problem we hear of is the time sink that hiring can become and the knock on effect of making potentially BAD hiring decisions.
Our suggestion: Know that you can’t magic up the perfect fit over night, plan around this and start every project with a measurable process to accurately vet candidates (both technical and company cultural).
These are the most common complaints that we hear, do you feel the same way?
To stem the tide of complaints we launched our D.R.A service last month.
It solves these problems for you.
We source, test and interview candidates on your behalf, only presenting you with the best candidates along with a summary of their interview results.
